How the Oklahoma Open Records Act works
Oklahoma's Open Records Act (51 O.S. § 24A.1 et seq.) declares it the public policy of Oklahoma to ensure and facilitate the public's right of access to government information. The Act applies to all public bodies, state agencies, boards, municipalities, counties, school boards, and other governmental entities, and grants any person the right to inspect and copy public records. No reason is required to make a request. Oklahoma's law does not specify a hard response deadline but requires agencies to provide access during normal business hours and respond to written requests within a reasonable period.
Fees are limited to the actual cost of copying; no fee may be charged for inspecting records or search time except for extraordinarily burdensome requests. Enforcement is through district court, where successful requesters may recover attorney's fees. The Oklahoma Attorney General's office provides advisory opinions. Common exemptions include attorney-client privileged materials, personnel records, trade secrets, and certain law enforcement investigative records.
