How the Nevada Public Records Act (NPRA) works
Nevada's Public Records Act (NRS Chapter 239) provides that all public books and records of a governmental entity are open to inspection by any person during normal business hours. Nevada's law is notable for not specifying formal request procedures: records must simply be available for inspection, and requesters need not explain their purpose. The law covers all state and local agencies, including state departments, counties, cities, and school districts. Agencies must respond within five business days, either providing the records, indicating where and when they may be inspected, or explaining the basis for denial.
Fees may be charged for the actual cost of duplication only. Nevada does not have a dedicated administrative body for public records complaints; disputes are brought in district court, where a prevailing requester is entitled to attorney's fees and costs. Common exemptions include confidential personal information, attorney-client privileged materials, trade secrets, and records specifically protected under other Nevada statutes.
